dhinapriscillalouise Asked: Changing a car seat into a belt positioning booster?

I can't find the instructions that came with our car seat and can't find them online either! I have a Cosco forward facing car set. The weight limit for it as a car seat is 40 lbs…just had my 2.5 year old at the docs and found out he weighs 49 lbs.
The car seat can also be used as a belt positioning booster for children 41-80 lbs. The problem is that I don't know how to do it!
Its a one piece seat and secured in the car using LATCH…My guess is that I leave it LATCH'ed in and and use the seat belt to buckle him in instead of the 5 point harness that's connected to the seat.
Can anybody help me?? Or have any suggestions?? I want my little man to be safe!!
Thanks

Answers:

Courage Answered:
Big boy.:)

Okay, unless your car manual says so, you need to assume that the LATCH is only good up to 40lbs.Some cars do have higher LATCH abilities but most don't.Can you tell me the name of the seat?I can look, I'm pretty good at finding the manuals and maybe someone on here actually has the same seat and has a manual.Usually you don't use anything to hold the seat in place other than the seat belt.

My suggestion though is to get another seat.
-booster seats are not regulated.Really.There's no standard of safety for them.
-at 2 1/2 he is likely to mess with the seat belt and possibly unbuckle himself.
-it's not recommended that kids should be in booster seats until at least 4-5 because their bones are not fully matured yet and the 2 point belt can do damage to their internal organs and bones.
-seat belts can and do malfunction, and a forward-facing seat that tethers on top gives a bit of added security should that happen.
-unless you can find the instruction manual, using the seat is dangerous because you may do something wrong that would make it less effective.
-where I live, my state has made it illegal to have a child under 4 in a booster. That should say how dangerous it is.

Since he's a large boy, I would recommend getting a seat with a forward facing ability to 65lbs+.The old Britax line, if you can find one, typically goes to 55-65lbs depending on the seat, and may be discounted since they're phasing them out, their new line goes to 70lbs, though some of their boosters (like the one below) go to 85lbs and then to a belt positioner to 120lbs.The Graco Nautilus goes to 65lbs, so does the Graco My-Ride, the Evenflo 65… if they say 65 in their name they basically will usually forward face to 65lbs.:)You can usually find different sales, like I know that Toys R Us was having a trade-in event where you bring your old one in, and they give you 25% off a new one.I can usually find a Graco My-Ride for $120 about, and there's baby sales going on right now so keep an eye out.

Personally, if it was me, that's what I'd do.It would be unsafe to recommend anything else.Without the manual, and the fact he's still so young, means you really should just get a better car seat to carry him.Like I said, the Britax booster goes to 85lbs in a harness, and 120lbs in a belt positioner, so that would last him for the next 6-7 years easily, making it a worthwhile investment.

LiquidPeppermint Answered:
I would suggest going to the place where you bought it to see if they have the seat. Then ask whether you can open a box and see the instructions.Or ask on Craigslist if anyone in your area has the instructions.

You might also call Cosco to find out whether they have instructions they could email you.Just make sure you know the exact model.

High-back.
What do you think about the 4 feet 9 inch recommendation? I can imagine a 12 year old would be really embarrassed having to ride in a booster seat but safety first. If you live in town though you could probably go without on short trips as long as they were in the back but it's probably better to use it at high speeds on the highway.

Was it a highback booster seat or a backless booster seat? backless

Would you force your child to use a booster seat even after age 8 who are under 4 feet 9 inches have to use a booster seat?probably would just keep doing.i doubt she would have rebelled

boneheaderss Answered:
A booster seat is normally suitable from 4years old. My daughter was 4 in september and we have a booster seat aswel as a 5point harness car seat. I always use the 5 point car seat as its safer and you cant be too careful. If it was raining real bad and i was taking her to nursery which is a 2min drive i let her sit on the booster seat. Also if we go in my mams car we use a booster seat (which is never for long journeys) Its up to the parent but if he only 22mnth i would defo wait till hes older.

Claire Answered:
Most states have laws about how long a child must be in a car seat. The AAP suggests that a child stays in a forward facing car seat till they are 4 AND 40 lbs.Anything smaller than this then your child is at significant risk of death in an accident. The rule of thumb is longer is better so I would keep him in the car seat until he outgrows the recommended weight or length of your car seat.

Lily Mick Answered:
In our state it's a MINIMUM of 4 years old but experts encourage parents to keep their children in a 5-point harness absolutely as long as possible. Many carseats will hold children to 65 pounds+ which will give you plenty of years past the bare minimum of 4 years old.

Marie Asked: Would you think this was rude?

Kids who sit in carseats or booster seats are bound to spill something in them from time to time, and this one woman I babysit overnight for has never washed her childs carseat so its pretty grubby so I was wondering if it would be rude to wash the carseat cover and tell her that I was washing other carseats and threw hers in with them. I have a infant carseat and booster seat but her daughter is to big for the infant seat and to little for the booster seat so I have to use hers.

Carson Answered:
As long as you are sure it is not going to ruin it, as if you could do any harm.Even though I don't like lying you could always stretch the truth and say that her daughter spilled something while you were watching her, and you wanted to clean it. That is nice of you to want to clean it. It is also a safety issue, because food and drink entrapped in the buckle can cause a safety issue, because it might block it from working properly.

courtney Answered:
I don't think it is.. just don't say anything about it unless she brings it up..

bubs Answered:
well unless you do actually wash the other ones it's a bit fibby, I'd just say your daughter spilled something on it and you wanted to wash it, I'm sure she's spilled something on it at some point so technically you wouldn't be lying.

wit beyond measure Answered:
Very sweet of you indeed If you are unsure whether it may ruin it, simply tell her you would like to wash it with others, and ask her if there is anything special that needs to be done for it.

Yvonne Answered:
I would try to clean it the best I could and not even mention it. But make sure you clean it properly. I didn't know there was a "wrong" way to clean car seats until a question I recently asked. Read this for tips: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index; .

Anyways, odds are she probably won't even notice. There was a family that came to the daycare I worked at and they were very dirty. Well, the mother. You can't blame the kids. Anyways, one night her daughter was mistakenly sent home with the daycare director's daughter's winter coat (very nice compared to her own daughter's) and she had no clue. She offered to give it back when we realized the mix up the next day but it was so dirty and smelly by then she was told to keep it.

kassey Answered:
If you are washing the other carseat covers with it it's definitely not rude. I don't know if she's just too busy to wash it herself or if she's forgetful (like me). I know I appreciate it when people do things like that for me. Especially seeing as it's a carseat cover….. What mom has the space in her hands to grab a carseat cover on the way in the door, not me. This has happened to me numerous times regarding other items.I would think something such as 'don't forget to go back and get the carseat so you can wash the cover' then by the time I would get in the door I would completely forget about it. Too much other mommy stuff on the brain.
Just make sure you don't ruin it. Whats the worst that could happen? She may ask you to not do it again??? Chances are she won't even notice, or she will and she'll forget about it two seconds later.
Best of luck!

Caitlin Answered:
I think it is sweet of you to consider it. I'm sure she wouldn't mind, I would make sure to follow the instructions on the tag to wash it, and if she ask just point out you wanted to make sure you didn't ruin anything of hers, so you gave is a wash to keep it in top condition for her.

cathrl69 Answered:
I'd think it was a bit odd if you made a song and dance about how you were washing other carseats. If you do washing for her anyway, just add it to the pile. Or, if you wouldn't normally do washing for her, just say "oh, something got spilt on it so I threw it in the washing machine."

Star is a chick Answered:
I wouldn't take the covers off if you don't have the manual to know how to put the harness back together correctly. It wouldn't be an issue with a belt positioning booster because there's no harness to put back together.

If you do choose to wash them and you have the manual to put everything back together correctly, be sure to put it in the wash first thing and line dry the covers. Some of them will shrink and not go back on properly if they're dried in a dryer (I use the no heat setting). No washing harness straps!

Click on Yvonne's link to find the car seat manual if you need it.

boneheaderss Answered:
I would ask because booster seat covers and anything involving safety equipment has to be washed in a certain way. But since it's a booster as long it is on gentle cycle with mild detergent shouldn't damage it in any way to loose safety. If it was a car seat with straps (a 5 point) I wouldn't want anyone washing it. Otherwise, I would be thinking that you are doing me a BIG favor.

Chelse Allen Asked: When can my son move into a booster seat?

My son will be 2 at the end of February, he weights roughly 35lbs. He is currently in a forward facing car seat, but he seems to be to big for it and I can tell he's uncomfortable.
When can he be moved into a booster seat with a back?
I tried looking up my states car seat laws but I couldn't find them. I live in Georgia.

April Answered:
I was told that once their neck is above the back of the seat then you need to move into booster, then again Im in Australia and we also have weight /size laws so may not be same as in Georgia. Good luck.

SuMmEr Answered:
Hmm booster seats don't have backs… Generally it's age 4 for a booster seat.. You probably just need a bigger car seat.. I'm a little confused because my daughter is 2.5 and tall for her age and she fits fine in her front facing car seat and will for at least another year..

Amanda Asked: What is the best carseat for my 3 year old?

My daughter just turned 3 and she is 37" tall and weighs about 37 pounds.she has gotten too big for the 5 point harnest. I have been researching belt position boosters but they all say 38" tall.Anyone know of a car seat that would be good for her and is a reasonable price?

Star is a chick Answered:
There are three things to look for to see if your child is too big for his forward-facing seat:

1. Weight limit. Your child must not exceed the child safety seat's maximum weight limit. Check your instruction manual for your seat's limits. Maximum weight limits range from 40 to 80 pounds.

2. Head Height limit. Your child's ears must not be taller than the top of the child safety seat.

3. Shoulder Height limit. Your child's shoulders must not be higher than the top harness strap slot used for forward-facing 5-point harness mode.

At 37 lbs she's just outgrown the size of my REAR facing seat and would fit in my forward facing for sometime. It's an alpha omega.

asrai Answered:
My 2yr old, is 26 pounds and 33 inches tall and in his car seat rear facing to age three. You need a new HARNESSED booster, and not some cheap one like the Evenflo Chase (too quickly outgrown). As for your car seat, which one do you have? Mine all fit even in the Cosco Scenera till age 4 and around 40 inches tall. You DO NOT want to go with a belt positioning booster, and in most states this would be illegal anyway. Star had great recommendations for seats for a preschooler. The Evenflo Secure Kid an be ordered through Toys R Us for about $100, they have a sale going on now.

Jessica Asked: when do i switch to a booster?

I have a 4 year old daughter who will be 5 in a couple months and starting Kindergarten next year. I still have her in a 5 point harness Britax Marathon. She weighs 45 pounds and the seat goes up to 65 but recently she has started complaining about being uncomfotable in her seat and she honestly looks too big for it even though she is under the weight limit and height so she has not "outgrown" it. Everyone I know with children this age have already switched them over to a booster…But I am so nervous about doing it…I'm so scared she will not be safe, she seems so young and fragile for a booster but looks too big for a car seat.. Any other moms going through this? Going crazy here…don't want to make a mistake.

Ivy has Twin Boys Answered:
Depends on what state you are in, but here in GA you can move them at age 4.

You can keep her in that one or move her, up to you.

Justins Mommy Answered:
you are the parent, do what you feel is safest.

my personal opinion: if my parents listened to what people said about weight and height requirements, I would have been in a car seat until i was in the 7th grade. how embarrassing.

but you dont have to listen to me at ALL. Do what you think is right.

mamusi sloneczko Answered:
you can do it now
my daughter weight 41 pounds and will turn 5 on August and this year will start Kindergarten and few months ago she is on booster
is gr8 now because it fits her right on

Bobbi Answered:
Our 5 year old, 44 inches / 36 pounds is still in aharnessed booster. At 45 pounds, she still is a bit light for a booster (and yes …… those booster seats say they are 'safe' for 40 pound kids. But what they don't say is that at the 40 pound weight this is the minimum level of safety allowed). Backless boosters offer NO PROTECTION at this age or weight. I know of two children the size of yours killed in low mph crashes both in backless boosters. One tipped out, the other was thrown into the side of the car. Look for a backless booster for Kindergarten, or keep her in her seat. We switched to a booster going into 1st grade for the oldest.

Rebel Revolution Answered:
Please, keep her 5 point harnessed for as long as possible. It is so much safer which you already understand.Backless boosters are so dangerous and I see so many 2+ year olds in them!If you think she is really not comfortable, take her and her seat to a carseat check. They have them in almost every area just try googling it.http://www.nhtsa.gov/Safety/CPS
Also, try checking out and posting in the forum here:
http://www.car-safety.org/
